  16. Yes, this is what Cardinal tech e-mailed me:

  19. "We have found problems with ICU that don't allow you to install
  20. a device on com1 or 2.  We recommend you remove the ICU
  21. program and install the file PNPSET.EXE.
  22. he following instructions will help you complete this.
  23. Removing The ISA Configuration utility (ICU)
  24. 1.  In the root directory on c:\ you must delete the file ESCD.RF.
  25. 2.  In the CONFIG.SYS you must delete the line that  says,
  26.      DEVICE=C:\PLUGPLAY\... then save your changes.
  27. 3.  In the SYSTEM.INI, in the [386Enh] section, delete the lines
  28.      that start with DEVICE=C:\PLUGPLAY...  then save your changes.
  29. 41%3.  In the SYSTEM.INI, in the [386Enh] section, delete the lines
  30.      that start with DEVICE=C:\PLUGPLAY...  then save your changes.
  31. 4.  In the WIN.INI file under the [windows] section, RUN= should
  32.      have no reference to ICU or PLUGPLAY after the equals
  33.      sign.  Save your changes if any were made.
  34. 5.  Delete the directories C:\PLUGPLAY and C:\ICU
  35. 6.  Exit windows and reboot your system.
  36. Installing PNPSET
  37. You must first determine which COM port and IRQ is available
  38. in your machine that will accept the modem without conflict.
  39. 1.  Exit Windows and get to the root directory DOS prompt (C:\)
  40. 2.  Put +Disk 4 of 4+ in the floppy drive and change to that drive.  (A: 
  41. <ENTER>)
  42. 3.  Type  ATTRIB -H  <ENTER> (unhide all hidden files)
  43. 4.  Type  COPY PNPSET.EXE C:\  <ENTER> (copy the file to your root 
  44. directory)
  45. 5.  Change back to your C drive. (C: <ENTER>)
  46. 6.  Type  EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT  <ENTER>
  47. 7.  Add this line to the autoexec.bat: PNPSET /RESET COM  IRQ
  48.      (Where COM is the number of the com port where you want the
  49.      modem and IRQ is the number of the interupt where you want
  50.      the modem.  ex: PNPSET /RESET 2 3 - the modem will be
  51.      configured for COM2 IRQ3)  This line should be added at the
  52. beginning of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Save your changes.
  53. 8.  Exit EDIT and reboot your system.
  54. PNPSET is now installed on your system and the modem will
  55. now appear to the system as a non Plug & Play modem."

  59. a.  Disable my Com2 in BIOS.
  60. b.  Disable my BIOS energy saver for my had drive.
  61. c.  Disable my software-based energy saver for the screen (called WESU).
  62. d.  Run the "modem diagnostics" that came with my bundled Faxworks; that 
  63. reset my modem, somehow, don't ask me how.
  64. e.  Edit my system.ini in the [386enh] section, to enable:
  65.       COM2FIFO=1
  66.       COM2BUFFER=1024
